Critical Thinking Skills by John McMahon at NILE

While at NILE I had the opportunity to take part in a training session with John McMahon about Critical Thinking Skills.

John divided our class into 2 groups , each one watching a video.
The two videos were "The Black Hole" and "The Blind Luck".
Next we swapped partner and had to tell each other about the video.
This activity implies 3 steps:
1 - watching;
2 - remembering;
3 - telling.

To check students' comprehension of the video:
-teachers might have sets of questions;
-teachers can ask students to write down 3 questions about the video they haven't seen.

Questions can refer to
HOTS (higher order thinking skills)
LOTS (lower order thinking skills)
Talking about questions, I think this page  is very helpful;

Examples of HOTS questions:
What made the protagonists behave that way?
To what extent do you agree that cheating is bad?
Would you have behaved the same?
What if the protagonist meant to use the money for charity?
Can you see a connection between the two videos?
Can you see a connection between the two titles?
What if the boss had come in?
What if the shop assistant had been honest?

Further activities:
The summary is given orally one sentence by each student.
Students might write a different ending to the story.

Critical thinking needs strong support of grammar, especially conditionals, modal verbs,..but it is usually appreciated by students who can express their opinions.
